Kicks Survive Biggest Scare on Beck's Late Goal
MERIDIAN, Idaho- Beck, Vin and Kelly helped Just 4 Kicks grasp victory from the Jaws of defeat to remain unbeaten Sunday at the Idaho Soccer Center. The Kicks extinguished the Flaming Pirahnas 9-8 with a furious final two-minutes.
Trailing 8-7 and running low on morale, Vin struck from just right of the box with 1:58 on the clock to tie the score and revitalize the Kicks.
Still the last thing anybody on that field wanted was to end in a tie. The Pirahnas kept pushing the ball with a mix of males and females driving the ball into the attacking third. The Kicks countered with a constant substitution rotation.
With just under a minute the Flamers looked to have the upper hand. Kelly, playing keeper for the full 44 minutes, dive to clear the ball to Jessica. By the time she reached the ball it was hovering outside of the goalie box and a penalty was called. After the referee took 20 seconds to march down the field, place the ball on the spot and explain that the defense could only stand on the goal line (It still doesn't make sense considering we're supposed to be 10 feet from the ball and if we all stand in a straight line we are not all 10 feet from a spot, but I digress).
The Pirahnas' free kick couldn't penetrate the Kicks' wall, they had another chance on the rebound from straight away but Kelly stood tall (ha) and took the shot off her stomach. Someone cleared the ball to Beck waiting on the sideline with 30 seconds to go.
Beck bobbed and weaved his way through the defense, finally cutting to the middle and unloading a shot from the top of the box. Keeping the ball down, he snuck the shot under the reach of the keeper for the game-winner with 20 seconds left.
The Pirahnas pressed on, but didn't get a shot off in the waning seconds as the Kicks celebrated its 7-0 start.
Kelly filled in admirably for Jeanne in front of the net. Don't expect her to volunteer for that role any time soon, though.
"That's the last time I do that," Kelly said. "I've done my time. Jeanne can have it back, oozing ass checks and all."
Still, it was Beck's mad dash to the goal for his second score of the game that stands out as the play of the game.
"I just heard someone yell, '30 seconds!' and knew I had to go," he said. "It feels really good to put the team on top, but this was a group effort. I'm really happy for the squad. They all deserved it. Now we have a couple hours to enjoy it before we get our bodies right and regroup for the next game. The next one is always the toughest one."
It was as big of a group effort as Just 4 Kicks have seen this season. Six males and four females found their way to the ISC for the 9:50 p.m. kick off. By the end the guys figured out how to use the depth to their advantage and the quick spurts could be a key strategy in the final three weeks of the season.
Part of the reason the Kicks found themselves in such an unfamiliar position was because Casey watched a girl roll her ankle. Fat Ref went ahead and called a foul anyway from his customary position 60 yards away from the ball. While homeboy was busy getting butt hurt over Mike's disapproval he failed to tell Vin he was less than the arbitrary 10 feet from the ball. Instead, the ball was kicked and Vin was penalized for being too close.
"It was bullshit," Casey said soon after the game. "That girl just fell. She said so herself. I was trying not to laugh when the (insert air quotes) 'official' blew his whistle."
With Vin in the penalty box, the Kicks played a person down for two minutes. With the power play winding down, the Pirahnas notched the tying goal, getting their first male score of the day.
Insistent on atoning for his two-minute minor, Vin asked for one more minute on the field. He subsequently allowed the go-ahead goal (his words). With less than 6:30 remaining the Kicks faced their latest deficit of the season and the outlook was grim. Despite controlling much of the game, the good guys were not finishing.
After four minutes of more of the same for the Kicks- plenty of good passing without strong shots on goal- Vin broke free to swing the momentum.
Thomas played a key role in the second half. He scored two goals and facilitated the offense that led to Vin's equalizer.
The Pirahnas were able to capitalize on the coed rules more than the Kicks. Just 4 Kicks held an 8-5 advantage in goals scored, but three of the Flaming Pirahnas' were of the female, two-point vairety.
Beck, Vin and Mike all scored in the first half for the guys. Randi added a strike for the Kicks' lone two-pointer which lifted them to a 5-2 lead at the break.
For Mike it was his first goal since the season opener. It wasn't the prettiest thing, using almost every body part imaginable to push a rebound shot over the goal line, but it regained the lead at 3-2.
Surprisingly absent from goal column in the box score were Ike, Tara and Jessica. The aberration can in part be chalked up to the late start time.
For Ike it was due perhaps more to an emphasis on using his left foot (or at least thinking about it) after Thomas explained to him the 'move' that has become affectionately known as 'The Ike,' which is circling any ball no matter where on the field to make it a right-footed shot. Honorary coach Mark Hiemenz described Ike's day more bluntly.
"He couldn't score with a wad of hundreds in a whore house," said Hiemenz, who also dubbed Ike the 'Nigerian Nightranger'.
Hiemenz claims he has more nicknames in store, but they weren't available at press time.
The Kicks will take their perfect record into a match up with Lowes at 9 p.m. next weekend. The Home Improvement Stores are just another team we know nothing about. Lowes took the field after Just 4 Kicks Sunday, so they will be playing on a little less rest.

Twitter Explodes With News of Kicks' Latest Win
By Libby Johnson, Guest Blogger
MERIDIAN, Idaho - Fans across the land watched their timelines in angst as Just 4 Kicks took over the twitter headlines on Sunday at the Idaho Soccer Center. #Tebow who?
An interesting lineup challenged the Kicks with Mike (@mwalsh88) and Casey (@cj1789) both vacationing. Steve Lucas (who brought two fans with him, this is a Kicks attendance record) and Evan Sprengel stepped in and started the game. Steve and Libby (@libberachi) held it down in the back, Team Perretta (@vinnyperretta19 and @JPerretta) controlled the middle while feeding Team Sprengel (Even and Tara) up top.
It took a jump start about halfway through the first half as one of the Kicks'
originals, Beck, subbed in a put two goals up on the board quickly. Shortly after goal number two, confusion and subbing got the best of the Kicks when REI notched a goal with nine minutes to play in the first. Evan earned his keep at the 6:45 mark with a goal to lead Kicks into half time up 3-1.
Thomas Dutcher (@ThomasDutcher) quickly put up his first goal of the night 30 seconds into the second half. With Kelly (@kellsk) out with a golfer's injury aka quad pull, girls were down one sub. Thankfully the newest member of the squad, Randi Baker (@Randeezi5), was there to step in and distribute. Thomas and Randi's midfield pressure led to another goal from Thomas, making it 5-1. More pressure and on-point passing from Steve allowed Evan to stutter-step his way to his second goal of the night, as he maxed out his scoring to join Thomas and Beck with two goals a piece.
Attempting a comeback surge, REI's keeper decided to get crafty and crept his way up the field, somehow dribbling past everyone and serving his choice of four different forwards. A guy in blue got his moment of glory as he snuck one past Jeanne, who is a God damn rockstar, making the score 6-2.
Jeanne was diving all over the place, using her feet outside the "box" and just being overall badass per usual. She may or may not have a concussion right now due to slamming the back of her head up against the wall, but still abiding by her husband's request to not come home with "oozing ass cheeks", so well done, Keep.
Just 4 Kicks finished strong, as Ike won a foot race against the nimble-ass keeper (the Man in Black) and netted his first goal of the night in the last few minutes. Up 7-2, the buzzer buzzed and Kicks swagged off the pitch with their heads held high. The undefeated Just 4 Kicks (5-0) regroup next Sunday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. (MT) against The Minions.
Notes:
...A new referee today. For sure had the best control of the game we've seen this season. Worth noting that "Big Ref" took the field after our game (to play, not ref, I think) and also bro-hugged it out with Vin upon our departure.
...Please excuse the overall shock factor of this writing as our usual Sports Information Director, Michael Walsh, is out of town like I said so deal with it.
...The Broncos beat the Steelers in OT.

Kicks Ring in New Year With Physical Victory
MERIDIAN, Idaho- The hardest fought win of the season may be the most rewarding for Just 4 Kicks. The squad rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat Meet The Machine 7-4, Sunday, at the Idaho Soccer Center. Just 4 Kicks moves to 4-0 on the season.
A goal from Vinny provided the game's first tally nearly 10 minutes into the match. The slim lead lasted about five minutes as Meet the Machine used a female goal to take a 2-1 advantage. The score remained the same through the halftime break.
Vinny was the first to score in the second half as well, knotting the game at 2. Moments later, Beck pounded home a goal and Just 4 Kicks was back on top, but not out of danger. A stretch of shots on goal from the Machine reminded the Kicks the game was far from over. When Mike finally cleared the ball from the defensive third, Thomas took it off the wall and launched a rocket into the back of the net for a two-goal lead.
That margin was quickly erased after a communication breakdown from Just 4 Kicks led to another female goal and a 4-4 tie.
In the final five minutes the game was still tied and everybody's feet were starting to drag. Seeing an opportunity, Beck drove the ball toward the corner and fired a shot across the front of the goal and into the net for a late lead.
With the outcome still hanging in the balance, Jessica got the Kicks' females on the board and sealed the victory with a strike from the top of the box.
Meet the Machine presented the stiffest challenge to date, but also the most obnoxious opponent. The most vocal culprit was "Surge" aka "Red Polo". He was pretty much everything you would expect out of a guy wearing a collared shirt with some sort of European accent. He was falling all over the place and begging for calls. (Side note: His begging was worthless since we're still not sure if the referee spoke English.) The Machine's other loud member was the goalie. He was overly concerned with Just 4 Kicks' females working him. Kelly, making her season debut, really got under his skin when she slid into the box trying to make a play. From there he made sure the referee knew every time he objected to a play on the field.
The douchey duo wasn't alone in commenting on the officiating and the game's physical play. At times, the entire Machine bench made their disgust known. Jeanne more than held her own in the shit-talking department for Just 4 Kicks.
Jeanne also let her game do a lot of talking in front of the net. She allowed just two goals (both to females) and thwarted numerous attacks. The Just 4 Kicks defense struggled with allowing rebound efforts from the top of the "box," but Jeanne was there to clean it up. One series saw her swat away multiple shots while on the ground to hold onto a 3-2 lead.
Just 4 Kicks was nearly at full strength Sunday, with 10 players suited up. Ike was missing for the second-straight game. He will return next week, but Mike and Casey will both be out of town. The season resumes Jan. 8, at 6:30 p.m. against REI.

Kicks Cross Their T's in Decisive Second Half
MERIDIAN, Idaho- On a day members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins cracked champagne as the Green Bay Packers' run at a perfect season came to an end, Just 4 Kicks would not let its season be derailed by a sluggish performance.
It was ugly, but Just 4 Kicks got the job done in a 16-10 win against The New Bu Rising, Sunday night at the Idaho Soccer Center. Tara led the way with four goals (eight points) in a furious second-half rally.
Just 4 Kicks (3-0) faced its first deficit of the season in the first half, trailing 3-2 after a female goal for the New Bu's made things interesting. One of The Kicks's subs (a female) scored a goal to swing the advantage, and Beck added a tally to push the lead to 5-3. The Bu's scored a contested goal with less than a minute to go in the half off a rebound/hand ball to tie the match as the teams went into the break.
The Kicks were a different team in the second half, thanks in large part to Tara and Thomas. Tara finished four shots to put the game out of reach. Thomas, who scored twice in the half, had a hand in all of Tara's goals. Even with Thomas' play in the attacking third, it took a mix of finesse touches and powerful strikes from Tara to light up the scoreboard the way Just 4 Kicks has grown accustom to.
Casey provided the final margin, flicking on a pass from Jess that creeped into the net with less than 30 seconds left.
The most entertaining goal was another assist from Jess. Looking to put a ball in the box and create a chance for The Kicks, Jess launched a cross into the box (perhaps an arrant shot, but that's irrelevant) that drilled Thomas in the chest. Out of sheer self-defense Thomas shielded himself toward the goal and the ball deflected into the back of the net.
With the defensive enforcer Libby out for this game, Just 4 Kicks struggled in front of its own goal. Casey was the last line of defense in the first half, before Mike took over in goal for the second half. The two keepers saw the most shots on goal this season and let a few slip through their hands. Mike alone had all three goals allowed go off his hands, including one over his head that was a real disappointment.
Mike started the scoring with his third goal of the season, less than two minutes into the game off a feed from Thomas. It was the start of a theme during the game with Thomas setting up countless goals and attempts for The Kicks.
Vin also scored in the first half. He did not tally a goal in the second half, marking the first time this season he did not reach his limit. Just 4 Kicks' offensive attack was also missing Ike and his 2.0 goal per game average.
Between the missing links and The New Bu Rising presenting the stiffest challenge thus far, Just 4 Kicks had to dig a little deeper to pull out this win. Despite the six-point cushion, every team member was seen breathing a sigh of relief once the final buzzer sounded.
Just 4 Kicks and their fans must wait another two weeks (at least) for the much-anticipated debut of Kelly, who couldn't make it Sunday, because she was busy selling shafts and balls at Dick's. (Golf people, sheesh).
ISC Indoor takes a break for Christmas, but Just 4 Kicks will be back in action on New Year's Day at 4 p.m. (MT), against Meet the Machine. There is no scouting report available on the Machine, as we have not met previously.

Just 4 Kicks Passes First Test
MERIDIAN, Idaho- Though the roster looked a little different than the week before, the result was the same for Just 4 Kicks Sunday, at the Idaho Soccer Center. Just 4 Kicks earned a 10-2 win against Abusement Park to move to 2-0 on the young season.
Just 4 Kicks entered the game without Thomas and Jeanne, the only team members to suit up as goal keeper in the season opener. Mike would strap on the gloves for this one and go the distance between the pipes.
Beck made his season debut to bring the males back to full strength. On the ladies' side, Katie made a spot appearance to fill in for Jeanne.
Early in the match Just 4 Kicks failed to convert chances, but also limited Abusement Park from any good looks. Vin broke the silence with a goal, and the Kicks were back in business.
Tara scored a two-pointer for a little more breathing room and soon after Vin found the back of the net again to reach his limit. (Remember, males can only score two goals per game and all female goals are worth two points).
Abusement Park got on the board when a guy whose hair was fashioned in cornrows or braids and was wearing purple shoes broke free at midfield and unleashed a rocket to the back of the net, closing the margin to 4-1.
With less than two minutes left in the half, Braids sent another shot toward the net and drilled Mike in the face. The Just 4 Kicks keeper picked up a save and a bloody nose on the play.
After an own goal by Abusement Park, Just 4 Kicks took a 5-1 lead into the half.
It was more of the same in the second half out of Just 4 Kicks. Ike scored twice, Beck tallied his first goal of the year and Tara pounded home the dagger for the final margin.
Strong midfield and defensive play neutralized the speed and on-ball skills of Abusement Park's forwards. Mike hid behind the impressive defensive play of Libby, Katie and Vin to allow just two goals. Cornrows/Braids scored both of the goals, but coming into the game it was expected he would reach his limit. Just 4 Kicks certainly made it difficult for him, and impossible for his teammates.
Abusement Park (1-1) put up a stronger fight than Sidekicks in Week 1, but Just 4 Kicks proved to be too formidable. Adding to the intimidation was the presence of Steve Lucas on the Kicks' bench.
Just 4 Kicks will take the pitch Sunday Dec. 18, at 9:50 p.m. (MT) against New Bu Rising. The Bu lost its first match against Abusement Park, 13-9. The result of The New Bu's week 2 match is unknown and really the only thing we do know about them is they have a veteran goalie.

Season Opener A Huge Success
Just 4 Kicks made a statement in its first match of the season, knocking off Sidekicks 25-1, Sunday at the Idaho Soccer Center. Safe to say Just 4 Kicks (1-0) was led by everybody in this one.
Vin reached his scoring limit (two goals per game for males) in the first five minutes and it was off to the races. Ike also scored a pair of goals in the first half and Thomas added another.
Jess and Tara tallied multiple scores in the first period for the women, while Jeanne played all 22 minutes in goal and kept the Sidekicks off the scoreboard.
Just 4 Kicks led 10-0 at halftime, or something close to that. Goals scored by females are worth two points. The offense didn't go away after intermission.
With Ike and Vin unable to score in the second half the focus shifted to Mike and Casey for the males. After numerous frantic attempts at the net in the opening four minutes, Mike finally settled a rebound shot for his first goal of the year. Casey netted his first goal just moments later when he tracked a lob shot in front of the net and tipped it in with his head.
Mike added a second goal to reach his limit, but the women stole the show in the second frame. Libby, Jess, Jeanne and Tara all put home attempts, if not three each. It was hard to keep track.
Thomas took over in front of the net for the second half and didn't get much action. He did allow the only goal, but it was more of a team letdown than anything. Sidekicks just didn't have the firepower to penetrate Just 4 Kick's defense.
Jeanne took advantage of the playing in the open field as she directed traffic from midfield, scored goals and even ended up in the penalty box.
Just 4 Kicks will resume its season Sunday, Dec. 11, against Abusement Park. The painful carnival played a thriller in its season opener, a 13-9 game against The New Bu Rising. Still not sure who won, but it was tied in the final three minutes before a pair of female goals put the game away for one of the teams.
